    Privacy settings

There's another little feature that's a part of your gamer profile that you may have missed. Privacy settings! Privacy settings allow you to fine tune what info is available about you on Xbox Live, and to whom.

Tip:  To set online privacy options, select your gamer card then select Edit Gamer Profile, Privacy Settings.

The first five settings control your interaction with other people on Xbox Live. Each of these (communications, online status, gamer profile, played games, and member content) can be set to one of three options: Everyone, Friends Only, or Blocked. A setting of Everyone means that anyone on Xbox Live can perform that action. If you want to limit access to just the people on your friends list, pick Friends Only. If you're a total recluse and don't to interact with anyone, choose Blocked.

Communications - Use this to control who can send you messages and invites. You'll still receive friend requests and system messages no matter what you set.

Online Status - Choose who can see your online status. People who can't see your online status (non-friends if you have it set to Friends Only, or anyone if you set it to Blocked) will always see you as offline. See my online status entry for more info about online status.

Played Games - Control who can see your list of played games. Handy if you've been playing a super-top-secret game that no one should see yet. Or, maybe you just want to hide the fact you've been playing Barbie Horse Adventure 2: Electric Boogaloo*.

Gamer Profile - Control who can see your motto. Fun fact: this used to be both gamer picture and motto (hence the more generic "gamer profile" label) but it was changed during development to just motto.

Member Content - This one doesn't have a lot of use right now, but it will as people create content to share with other people. You can choose whether you want to see the content.

The last two options are for marketing. Essentially, you're telling Xbox Live whether you want them to bug you in e-mail. You originally set these when you signed up for Xbox Live.

Xbox Marketing - This controls whether you want Microsoft or Xbox to send you offers and info in e-mail. You can opt in or opt out.

Partner Marketing - This controls whether you want other parties (publishers, partners, and the like) to send you e-mail. You can opt in or opt out.

One thing to note: these settings apply only to autonomous adult accounts. If you've got a child account controlled by Family Settings, there are similar options, but they're set in Xbox Live Family Settings on the System blade. Parents can control their child's privacy settings there.

So there you go. More ways to customize your own experience on Xbox Live. Enjoy!

    * this game does not exist. Well, it exists, if only in my dreams...

Edit: added a short definition to first paragraph.

AiusEpsi, I think it's something about an account being marked as a juvenile account when you create it, and having some effects carry forward even after you've reached legal age. I'm not sure what the solution is, but I know the Xbox Live team is aware of the issue. You could try calling support to see if there's something they can do. Even if they don't have an immediate solution, your call will help the teams get a handle on how many people are affected by the issue.

I was under 18 when I created my Live account, but I'm 18 now, how can I make my account a regular one? I want to be able to edit my own privacy settings.

Tom, there are some special things about juvenile accounts (accounts that were created when the owner was under 18). I believe (don't quote me on this tho) that banner ads are one thing that are affected by juvenile status. As far as your login info, try www.passport.net. You can change some of the info stored there, but it's still the same Passport Network account under the covers. It may still be considered a juvenile account as far as Xbox Live is concerned.

Thanks, all, for the compliments. It's good to know I'm on the right track. :)

    Hey Elle!

    Great blog, good stuff!

I've had a problem with my XBOX 360 for a while now, well it's not really a problem but it's bugging me.
The problem i've been having is the Ad's won't show up in the XBOX Live dash'. (The adverts for the new demo's, game's, etc...)

I think this Privacy settings thing in the answer. But there's one prob, when I go on my gamercard, edit gamer profile, it dosn't show up.

Now I think this is because i'm only 16, and when I enerted my own e-mail address for XBOX live it made me enter an over 18 one too. For all the things on Live etc. I managed to turn all of family settings off, but I don't know how to get around this prob. (I know the over 18 password btw)

Obviously you won't be able to look for yourself because you don't have any of the restrictions
etc.. But if you do have any info which could help me i'd appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Tom :)

Great post, Elle! It looks like a lot of people are having trouble finding these features though? Is this yet another function that was left out for juvenile-flagged accounts?

Hmm... it looks like MN is going to continue to get a bunch of viewers to your blog.
