Usage restrictions

Some people have asked how an Xbox Live Arcade game decides to play in full mode or in demo mode. The info is actually in the Marketplace FAQ (under Premium Content), but to paraphrase:

To play the full version of any Xbox Live Arcade game that you've downloaded, you must:

  • Play it on the console to which it was originally downloaded, or
  • If on another console, be signed in to Xbox Live with the profile that downloaded the full game.

If you don't meet either of these criteria, the game will slip into demo mode.

We do this to make sure the game actually belongs to you. You can play it on your friend's console as long as you're there, but when you go home, your friend can only play the demo until they get their own copy from Xbox Live Marketplace.

If you remember, the rules on the original Xbox were even more restrictive; you could only access content on the console it was originally downloaded to. The advent of profiles with Xbox 360 allows for some roaming, while still protecting the content.

I know some folks have run into this after getting a replacement console back from Xbox support. If this happens to you, you can just redownload the game. If you usually sign in to Xbox Live and play, you'll have full access to the game and notice no difference at all. But, if you try to play offline, the restriction will kick in. If you really need to play offline on a replacement console, give support a call and see what they can do for you.

The ideal way to roam is with a memory unit. Keep your profile on an MU, so you can just log in on any 360 you happen to be in front of. It gets a little sticky when you have four visitors signing in  since there are just two MU slots. In this case you'd have to move the profile temporarily from the MU to the HDD or another MU to get everyone signed in at once, then move it back when it's time to go home. You move profiles over in the Memory area on the System blade.

On the original Xbox, you really didn't have this notion of profiles, just a gamertag and account. You could just recover the account to multiple boxes and hop between them. Now that you have profiles and a bunch of stuff associated with profiles, recovery is more of a drastic step, not meant for roaming.

If someone could give me some guidance here. I cant seem to figure out how to allow my friends to load thier profiles (aka passport/live accounts) onto my xbox360 so that they can play games under thier own name when they are all over. Everytime we try to add thier gamertag we are forced to use the 'Recover my gamertag' method which warns you that all profile info and saved games will be deleted from all other consoles if added to mine. (something to that terminology)

I would like to do exactly what Elle was elduing to: "If you remember, the rules on the original Xbox were even more restrictive; you could only access content on the console it was originally downloaded to. Playing GRAW with a bunch of friends at my house is a regular occurance (92" diagonal screen), and I would love to let them use thier own profiles/settings. Anyone have any ideas! Elle?!

In a family situation, if the family is using the console to which the game was originally downloaded, the game will play in full mode for anyone on the console, online or off.

If you're talking about a family situation in which the console has been replaced by support, note the last line in my post. To play offline (that is, to allow the family to play without having to sign in with the owner profile), call support.

What about an xbox used in a family, as in, there are more than one person using it. Is it really reasonable to demand that everyone in the family buys one copy of the arcade games? If that is the intention why let anyone besides the person who bought it play at all, before it broke down? :)

I guess the only thing I can do is pray my xbox will never break :)
